We ordered really cool hoodies, they should be great, go team IL
We ordered really cool buttons too.
Tomorrow Sheridan has practice with Ms. IL Coed, our friend Tamara for her talent and yesterday we went and had her gown resized, she grew since June and we had a new dress made, baby doll style for her talent, so exciting.

I happened to pick up a few of her other dresses from the seamstress too and she will wear the gown we had cut down b/c it didn't fit her anymore, and it is soooo cute!!!

political commentary or a joke? hmmm

A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost. She lowered her altitude and spotted a man in a boat below. She shouted to him, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am." The man consulted his portable GPS and replied, "You're in a hot air balloon, approximately 30 feet above ground elevation of 2,346 feet above sea level. You are at 31 degrees, 14.97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude. She rolled her eyes and said, "You must be an Obama DEMOCRAT."

"I am," replied the man. "How did you know?" "Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is technically correct. But I have no idea what to do with your information, and I'm still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help to me." The man smiled and responded, "You must be a REPUBLICAN." "I am," replied the balloonist. "How did you know?" "Well," said the man, "you don't know where you are or where you are going. You've risen to where you are, due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise you have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. You're in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but somehow, now it's my fault."

Apple Fest Long grove 2010

Had a great time today at Apple Fest in Long Grove, IL, 2010. It was definitely chilly. Thanks to Sam H. for making the best outfit, the baby doll jacket with apple accents. Was so perfect for this weather.

This was one of Elizabeth Jones' pageants, all natural and very fun. there were the most kids in the 2-3 range at 11, then the 4-6 range had about 5 and the 7-9 had about 4 and then the 10-12 had 4 and then older there were 2.

Sheridan is friends with two girls she was competing with, meg and Frances. They are grea girls. they all looked so cute and had a great time.

above picture Left to right: Sam, Meg, Sheridan, Frances

We also got to see our friend Orianna, age 5, who was amazing as always!!! She won Grand Supreme, great job Orianna. Her and Sheridan are really just best buds and so cute. Sheridan won the division crown. She was very excited.

Overall they all win crowns and get goody bags and they have a very fun time.

Nice job to all!!

Pageant this past weekend Simply Stunning and RBI

Cassandra and Sheridan modeling in Swimwear

This past weekend Sheridan competed in this natural pageant called Simply Stunning. The woman running the program orginally wasnt going to have enough people so on FB we announced it and many of our friends joined in as well. There ended up being about 28 people in Simply Stunning the natural pageant and then the Rhinestone Beauties pageant - glitz also took place after SS and had 9 girls compete, all had been in SS.

Sheridan did a great job modeling her gown and her swimsuit. Here scores were amazing but the photos I submitted fell short. Need to submit different ones next time. That being said she still was one of the top girls. She got the beauty supreme title for girls 5 and over. so her bathing suit and gown scores were excellent which kept her on top. She had one perfect score in gown and two were one short of perfect. Not bad.

Sheridan and Orianna. Orianna and Sheridan have become great buds, so cute.

The sad part was this was a new pageant here in IL and the shipment of crowns was either lost or stolen, some sashes were in the box too. Therefore the girls were kind of let down. Denise Page, the director said she would be sending an email to everyone to confirm who did not get their sash and also send the crowns out after ordering a new batch. if she made any money it will be lost now. the problem is until you get that crown in hand you dont know if you really will. if we get it, we will confirm at a later date. it was a pretty crown too, we saw pictures.
sheridan had fun with all her friends. Cassidy did great and so did Brianna, Bridgette and Marissa as well as Orianna, Peyton, Sydney and of course our friend Cassandra who is also going to Coed nationals with us and excites us much!!
check out the top winners below and i am posting pictures too.

Sheridan and her Girlfriends.

RBI - Glitz side
Beauty Supreme - Sydney
Novice - Tina
Mini 0-4 Peyton 5+ Orianna
Grand 0-4 Sienna 5+ Cassie

SS - Natural side
Beauty Supreme 0-4 Ana 5+ Sheridan
Novice 0-4 Sheridan 5+ Serena
Mini 0-4 MacKayla 5+ Sydney
Grand 0-4 Sienna 5+ Tina

the other cool thing was that there was this girl Sheridan who was 4 years old there. we have never been around another sheridan so much. it was cool for my sheridan.

Community Service / Glenview Community Church will be sponsoring an American Girl Fashion Show

Community Service is important in Pageants as well as politics.
That being said, come support a great cause and watch Sheridan modeling.

American Girl Fashion Show

Glenview Community Church will be sponsoring an American Girl Fashion Show at the Marriott Lincolnshire Resort on October 16 & 17th. This event is an innovative way to raise funds for 3 children’s causes:

Common Threads of Chicago
By the Hand
Glenview Youth Services

This entertaining event will feature a fashion show with historical and contemporary fashions modeled by girls along with their American Girl dolls – local models from the community will bring the experience to life. It will be a learning experience for both girls and their families – as fashion-related history will tie together stories of the American Girl characters from the early 1800’s until present day. This memorable event is a wonderful opportunity for GCC to include the local north shore community in mission outreach for a variety of charities for children.

Celebrity Chef Gale Gand will be designing the tea and brunch menus and will be on hand to autograph copies of her new book: ‘Gail Gand’s Brunch!’
More information to come!

Tickets are $40 for Tea at 10 am on Saturday or Sunday

Tickets are $40 for Lunch at 2pm on Saturday or Sunday.

Sheridan is modeling on Saturday at both the Tea and the Lunch.

Come watch and suport a good cause. If interested, please advise so I can get you/sell you the ticket.

We are supposed to sell 5 and I am buying one!!

thanks Sari

Libertyville Township meeting

Tonight was an average meeting, only lasted one hour.
Approval of bills was standard. there was one expense a little high in the road and bridge fund but budged for and was for a ditch liner in a street in an area with flooding issues.

There were no Township reports, and the Assessor was not there and everyone else, the supervisor, clerk, highway commissioner and trustees were and had no reports.

We received an update on the food pantry...it is scheduled to be completed by next Friday Sept. 3. Very exciting. The next things to be done by next weekend are landscaping, paving the parking lot, putting in the storage racks and units, painting the pantry and putting in the flooring.

The big issue tonight was the Liberty Prairie Trail Relocation near Casey Road. There were many community members who showed up to state their concerns including the expense for the movement of the path. We explained this has been a long time coming, was put in the wrong spot and is because we are having to protect some important virgin prairie land. This is a state protected land. We requested proposals for the path to be moved from civil engeineers and we had 15 proposals. They were all required to have done such type of work and answered questions to the same to assure they know how to work in such land.

Regarding old business we talked about the newly submitted social service applications. 27 were picked up 25 returned on time, 1 late and one not at all. The late one came from teh Sr. Council of Libertyville and as per policy it will not be considered b/c it was not returned on time. It seems our office did contact them reimind them to pick it up and the when they did not turn it in we reminded them to turn it in and the due date it had to be in by.

That is the gist of the meeting. You should have been there.

Other misc. news our Township Open Space manager bred his two labs and the girl had a litter of 10 pupc which have been certified and he is selling at a good price. they are currently about 4 weeks old.

College of Lake County Movie Night

You may ask, what does the College of Lake County Movie night have anything to do with pageants and politics, well on this Friday night they are showing an outdoor movie outside the multipurpose filed on Washington Street in Grayslake.

They are showing the movie Iron Man 2.

Sheridan will be there in crown and sash as the Miss Preteen IL American Coed Queen selling glowsticks to help fundraise to go to nationals. Come support her and us and watch a great movie and buy a glow stick or two at $1 each. Bring the kids.

thanks,

Grayslake Parade

On Saturday, August 21, 2010 was the Grayslake Parade at 7pm. Sheridan was on the float for the Miss Northern Suburbs program as the Miss Northern Suburbs Outstanding PreTeen with 3 princesses, Alyssa, Sofia and Kiersten.

The Grayslake Theme was Grayslake's Got Talent and our float had a hollywood/oscar theme. I will post pictures to follow too. Sheridan got to sing on the float the entire time. She sang Golden Rainbow. Our director bought an amp so she could sing. The whole parade was amazing and Sheridan sang amazingly well.

Earlier that day sheridan sang at the Graylake talent contest and she won as did all the contestants, originally there were going to be 10 but there ended up only being five.

It was a great day.

NISP Barks for life

this past Saturday August 21, 2010 in Cary, IL there was a Barks for Life Event. it was a great walk for cancer awareness. At this event NISP Northern IL Scholarship Program, the pageant that does tons of community service, sponsored a Dog Pageant. All the NISP Queens ran the pageant. It was so fun. There were about 14 participant dogs in 3 categories, Little, medium and large dogs. There was a better term but I dont recall at this moment. One dog one in each category a little crown and cape. I will post pictures to follow.

Sheridan was a Mama Goose, petting and playing with the dogs, as a hostess as they were waiting to go on stage to compete.

There were side option awards too like best smile, best hair, best awwww factor etc.

This was a success. Great job!!

absent - gearing up for nationals

so i have been absent in my postings because Sheridan is away at camp. It has been a wild summer.
After sheridan won coed, she then finished up at the Improv Playhouse Camp production of Grease where she played Rizzo, in a jr. high version of the production. Then she went away to her overnight camp for 3 weeks, with a little interruption of me picking her up to take her to an American Girl Doll shoot and then back to camp again. She finishes camp this week and then back to gearing up for pageants.

The things we are working on now is fundraising to go to nationals for American Coed. There is so much involved, so much to do. We have to fundraise and sell two full ad pages at $600 each. I have sold one page and 1/4 of the 2nd page.
We are selling glowsticks to cover the costs of the hotel and gain sponsors and gain donations to turnaround and sell to pay for the costs of the optionals.

We need to work to cover costs for food/rental car and gas. We arent even working on the cost of any new clothing. There are two dance outfits to buy too though.
Lots to work for.

We have a bake sale at a post office, selling glowsticks and light up fans. We will see if we can come up with more ideas. We are also selling candy bars at my job to raise money.

This is a lot of work. Sheridan needs to come up with some events too and is also busy in her other systems doing events too. All in all, it is august 2 and there is so much yet to do. UGH!!
come check out our updates later!

Behind in Posting - American Coed, She Won

So i am very behind in posting, this seems to happen once in awhile. Sheridan Hurtig won her division in Illinois American Coed 2010 on June 20, 2010. Sheridan now holds the title of Miss Pre-Teen IL American Coed 2010. She also won in the optionals of Speech, Community Service and Actress. She took first runner up in Modeling and Actress. I thought she was amazing. I was so proud.

Now we have to do a lot of fundraising to get her to go to nationals in Orlando, FL at Thanksgiving. If you know anyone who can donate, feel free to send them our way.

We are selling ads in our national ad book at $60 for a business card size; $150 for a 1/4 page; $300 for a 1/2 page and $600 for a whole page. We have to sell two pages, plus we need to fundraise to cover the cost of optionals and the cost of the hotel, airfare, food, rental car, etc. It is a tough road be we have already started.

i will keep you posted.

Miss IL Coed pageant

Tonight was the first night of Miss IL Coed.

The power went out at about 5 - 6 or longer. That kind of threw things off. The talent competition was supposed to start at 7 but we ended up starting at 630.

There are a lot of girls competing this year.
In Sheridan's pre-teen division there are 15 girls. I would say there are 5 that will be real competitors for her!!

She was great at talent tonight. I think she either won or got 1st runner up, but I may be biased. There were two other singers besides Sheridan. One sang acapela and was pretty good. One sang a very difficult song that is sung by Alfaba in Wicked... hard for a professional adult. Her other main competition was the girl who did baton twirling. The music selected was great and she did pretty well but she did drop a baton once... not sure how much it hurt her score. She did get the audience clapping with the music.

tomorrow is a big day with Intro and Interview at 1130am; Actress at 1; Speech at 2; Modeling at 3 and formalwear at 530.

We are staying at the Hyatt Rosemont tomorrow night because we are sharing a room with Connie and Brittany L. That is great because then we can stay and it only costs $65 (1/2 price)

Crossing my fingers for Sheridan. Our realistic goal for the pageant is top 5 however I would love her to win of course.

Sunday is opening number rehearsal from 8-9am and then time to get ready for crowning and awards ceremony at 11. Come join us if you want.

Libertyville Township Ground Breaking Ceremony for Food pantry

This past Tuesday we did a ground breaking ceremony for the Libertyville Township Food pantry. Over the past two years we have budgeted about 450K to allow a new pantry to be built. We service about 250-270 families per month.

Currently we are working out of a dilapidated garage that is falling apart and not what I would say is sanitary or up to code. All the non perishable food has been moved into the conference room, in half of it, hidden by a collapsable wall...

We had the ground breaking ceremony with our builders, Pepper Construction and Architects.

It was a good feeling to know we are doing something worthwhile for people in need. This last building will be attached to the main township offic building and will complete the campus.

Pearls of Paradise Pageant, aka the Puppy pageant

Last weekend, Saturday, Sheridan competed in the Pearls of Paradise pageant. She was competing for the high point supreme, the highest crown where she could win $150 or a mini supreme where she wins $50 plus she was also competing for the pomeranian puppy. To win the pomeranian you had to have the highest beauty score.
She did not win it.

For the Supreme you needed the highest overall score of Beauty and 4 optionals. Sheridan competed in 5 of the 6 optionals, photo, comp card, talent, swimsuit, and outfit of choice.

She won. All girls get a crown and sash and a neat gift from the director. Sheridan also won the $150.

Libertyville Township Meeting

Today we had our Libertyville Township meeting. Supervisor O'Connor was there as well as all 4 trustees, including myself, our Clerk Anne Hansen and our Highway Commissioner Bill Morgan were all present as well as a few from office staff.

The meeting was at 7pm today and was very brief. We talked about the upcoming ground breaking for the new food pantry to occur 4pm Tuesday the 15th of June at our main location 359 Merrill Court, Libertyville, IL 60048. Join us for this momentous occasion.

On the 19th of June, a Saturday, at 10 am, is the Libertyville parade and the township will have a float. The them is Rock this town and we will have the Buckley Rd. Band on our float and celebrate Rockin with Libertyville Township Open Space.

This year I can't be there b/c we have a pageant to attend.
Last year we won the trophy for best float. Can we make it two years in a row?

There is a concern about heavy mosquitos this year and we are considering spraying in the unincorporated Libertyville Township areas, in the corporated areas the town sprays those areas.

Join us at our next board meeting on June 24th at 7pm.

Miss Illinois OPT and OT, 2010 going on today & tomorrow

Sheridan is competing in Miss IL outstanding Preteen in Springfield this weekend.
I think things are going pretty well. She had interview today, and it sounds like it went very well.

They asked her questions like, if you could tell President Obama one thing, what would it be... She said, you need to tell the people to help and donate to the local food pantries because it is important to me and there are many people suffering b/c of the bad economy and job loss and they need food.

One of the judges asked her why The Biggest Loser was her favorite TV show and she explained about how many kids have childhood obesity and it is important to stay fit and walk and to drink a lot of fluids, water and stay hydrated and eat healthy. (this judge is the one who was a fitness expert).

She was asked what one thing she would bring on an island and she said a photo album because it holds pictures of friends and family and many memories, so although it is one item it is like many items in one.

She looked great in her aqua blue knit suit/dress and shrug.
They had a long practice in the afternoon to get ready for opening number. She has a great purple top that our friend Sam made. We love it. It is cute and an original, no other girl will be wearing a top like hers.

Sheridan had a talent rehearsal too. We switched from a hand microphone to a headpiece microphone. Tonight we did some review of the talent b/c of the switch it means both hands are free for her act. We also did some polishing and a quick review for tomorrow.

In the morning, Sunday she has a 3 hour dress rehearsal, a break for lunch, and we will get hair done, check out and pack the car and then she goes back at 1pm for her pageant from 2-5.

No matter how she does she is a winner to me. We told her to be all out positive and turned on, high energy and i know she will do great.

We believe in realistic goals so our aim is for top 5. If she wins, great and if not, top 5, win or runner up 1-4 would be good too.

Good Luck to Sheridan. Your mom is so proud.

Pageant Weekend is Upon Us. Miss IL Outstanding Pre Teen in Springfield

This weekend starts the Miss IL Outstanding Teen and Pre-Teen Competition. Very Exciting.

I have all the outfits packed and labeled. All the curlers, shoes, socks, hose etc packed.

I have the luggage on my bed, ready or almost ready, to go.

I am so proud of Sheridan. No matter how she does I know it will be great.
There are 14 girls competing. Sheridan has improved 100 fold too.

I just switched hotels from $89 per night to now $50 per night and got the Teen, another Pre-Teen and an IL's got talent competitor to switch too, all of our friends. There is free breakfast too and we are only 2 blocks from the Hoogland Center in Springfield where the competition is and parking is free too. yeah.
We like free.

Sam our friend and Sheridan's coach is coming too, to do her hair. She is coming up with our directors from Miss Northern Suburbs, Kristen and Robin. They are at the same hotel too and so is our Miss. Party!!!

Hope I dont forget anything and that the trip goes well. Our Teen's mom freaked me out worrying about traffic b/c it is Memorial Day weekend but we are leaving at 130pm and it is a little less than a 4 hr. drive so even with traffic I should get there b/f 7. We have to check in from 5-7 at the Hoogland Center.

You have turn in all the outfits.

So Wish Sheridan Luck. We are turning in the sheet that shoes how many raffles she sold, it should be 5 or 6 when i am done tomorrow and we fundraised anywhere from $140-180 for Children's Miracle Network and then there is the change we collected which I will count at Jewel at the counter machine tomorrow morning.

I know Sheridan will do great. Come Join us to cheer her on this Sunday the 30th of May from 2-5 at the Hoogland Center for $25 per ticket.

Libertyville Township Meeting

toonight was a regular Libertyville Township Meeting. It started at pm and was very quick today. All township trustees were present, so was the clerk, the supervisor and the highway commissioner as well as a few of our office staff who are regularly there. We approved bills as always, asked questions if we had any.

The highway commissioner talked about looking out for ticks and bats this summer season.

The supervisor report covered the # of people who came to our food pantry, which was 236 households, 661 people. She also lists all the organizations and companies and people that donate. Thank you so much for donating to the Libertyville Township Food pantry.

June 9 is senior picnic day at Independence Grove from 9am - 12. We are donating and giving out hot dogs as last year. If you are a Senior 55+ come out and enjoy the day.

The food pantry is going to have the moved out on June 7 and power diconnected to follow on June 9 and June 11 the employee parking lot will be closed.

There was a tea to thank all of our food pantry volunteers on April 22 that went well.

This year we will have a float again in the Libertyville days parade. the Theme is Rock this Town and we will be Rockin' the Township and Open space and have the Buckley Road band joining us on the float and rocking out!.

We had an update on our Wetland Mitigation Bank at Atkinson Road. We are awaiting approval from EPA/Fish adn Wild life and the Corp already advised.

For new business there is a township citizen who has a house that is in the Des Plaines River flood zone and has applied for a grant to get relief, basically for the government to buy out their house but the Township has to consider if we will help too, whether it be with money or in assisting in the land clearance and if we take this on it could lead to opening a can of worms in the area b/c there is an entire community of houses in this area. Not sure if the Township can or has the funds to take this on. If we take over the house, which gets knocked down, we then take the land and add it to the Open Space... we will discuss in next township Meeting on June 10th at 7pm. We need to study and learn more b/c this is the first we ahve heard about this.

June 15 at 4pm will be the ground breaking ceremony for the Libertyville Township new food pantry.

come join us.

meeting miss america

Sheridan and I went with Ashley Miss Chicago OPT and Linda, her mom and her friend Theresa and Linda's mother-in-law to go see Miss America at the DSW in Oakbrook.

It was great meeting here. I will post pictures later.

We ran into other fellow title holders too, Sydney Shotwell and Ali Nicole Browning as well as Sherry last years Miss Northern Suburbs and the current Miss Glen Ellyn with the International system.

All were so nice. It is fun to see other girls outside of the pageant competitions.

Miss Northern Suburbs fundraiser and Fashion Show Luncheon

It was a great time for all today. The girls all looked great and I think the fundraiser was a success.

The food was nice, we had sandwiches, cookies and lemon bars, various salads, a bean and corn salad and a green lettuce salad and iced tea and lemonade. There was plenty of food with leftovers.

the company was great of course, led by our pageant directors Robin Ruchti and Kristen Pradep this fundraiser went off without a hitch, very smooth going, although I know Robin only had 4 hour sleep, last minute preparation and all.

All the girls modeling were queens from our own queens, Corina, Taylor and Sheridan the Miss Norther Suburbs Miss, Teen and Pre-Teen respectively as well as our princess, a couple of Lake County Fair queens, Little Miss Vernon Hills Queen,Brianna, Last Years Miss and Princess, a Dream Girls Queen, Hanna, Miss Chicago Pre-Teen,Ashley, Miss Teen from Oak Lawn (I think Oak Lawn) - Sydney S., the Little and Junior from Libertyville and last years princesses to Corina, and of course our own Miss IL Erin.

They all looked great and were very beautiful. They modeled fashions from Kohl's in Gurnee. Fashions ranged from dresses to casual. Sheridan was great and even through in her modeling moves.

Corina and Taylor talked about their platforms and Sheridan sang a song. She was amazing as usual, proud mama here of course.

Taylor and Sheridan went around selling raffle tickets as well. there were about 20 raffles to give away ranging from jewelry and stationary to various gift cards to Curlvers and Starbucks. I won two, one was jewelry, a beautiful set of earrings and necklace and a Starbucks gift card.

There was also a silent auction and the items ranged from books, a phone, tupperware, as well as tickets to the indoor football leagues games, nights stays at various hotels, photo packages with Fedler studio, the official photographer for Miss Northern Suburbs pageant system, Culvers 12 pints of custard, and so, so much more.

There was also some pageant jewelry for sale all at reasoanble prices. I bought three new crown pins at $8 each... such a deal. there are rings too!!! if you are interested I can hook you up!!

David Stuart from the Improv Playhouse in Libertyville was the Emcee for the fashion show and he was excellent as always. We got him to volunteer, he is our friend and Sheridan takes classes from the Improv and is going to theater camp there too.

All in all a great day. Join us next year!

Community Service

Today Sheridan and I went to a church in Libertyville that has a food pantry every third Saturday of the month. This month there were 210 families, down from previous months.

Sheridan and I talk about communtiy service and we believe it is important, not just to help other but it also helps us and humbles us.
Sheridan is learning and understanding that if I lose my job we could easily be one paycheck away from needing to go to the food pantry too.

This pantry is unique in that they do not have a storage location. The Northern IL food bank shows up with a truck of food the church orders for the food pantry distribution that day.

They offer canned goods, fruits and vegetables, soups, tuna, as well as being a unique pantry because they order Breads, Fresh Fruits, Cakes, and sweets, Frozen Meats. Many pantries dont have the ability to store refrigerated or frozen food so this becomes a luxury to many of these people in need.

Today we arrived at 9am, and the truck was being unloaded. Sheridan and I were assigned to sorting the cans of fruits and vegetables and then we moved on to sorting the pastas and a bunch of misc. stuff. Sheridan also counted items and marked quantities on boxes.

Once we know what we have they count the totals and advise what we can give each family.
At 10am we all pray together and then start lining the people up, they are assigned #'s when they arrive.

I was giving out the soups/beans/ tuna/ canned meals - Sheridan was giving out the fruits and applesauce. they had enough applesauce for every family to get at least one can plus other fruits. the soup had cream of chicken and rice in abundance to give out that extra as well plus 3 cans of soup/tuna/beans or canned meals.

we left at about 1240 b/c i had to get to the doctor. Time went so fast. I was surprised it was almost one when we left. there were about 30 more families in line... others took our spot.

It is great to help and see people, face to face. we show respect b/c we could all be in need at anytime too.

Donate time to a community service that makes you feel good, food pantries or otherwise but help others. It is so important.

Libertyville Township Annual Meeting last night, Tuesday

Last Night was the annual Libertyville township meeting. We had a great turn out, unlike at our regular monthly meetings. The boyscout Troop 60 from Libertyville came out to lead the pledge. I loved that. It had been my idea to allow and invite local groups/organizations to come out and lead the pledge at our meetings and we give them a certificate for coming out.

The Assessor gave a report, so did our Highway Commissioner and Supervisor. Much praise was given for the staff in all the offices, both the township office and assessor's office as well as the staff of the highway commissioner and open space offices. I concur, they are all great, do a great job.

I also spoke and said how great this township group was. We may not all agree but we discuss issues and are fair and responsible in our decisions, doing what we think is best for our community and what they would want us to do on their behalf.

We are currently working on building a new food pantry this summer which will complete the campus. Lately per month, we have been supporting about 270 families consisting of about 700+ individuals. The new pantry will be a great addition to the township.

In open space we had volunteer day this past Saturday which I attended with a group from one of the pageant programs that does a lot of community service.

LTDO meeting tonight

Was a great Libertyville Township Dems. Org. meeting led by Tom.
We talked about the various plans for the future including developing bylaws.

we have a steering committee made up of the elected officials of the organization and committee heads.
there are many committees to join including heading the parades, newsletters, communication, liasion between 8th or 10th dist dems and many more.

We talked about being at the libertyville and Mundelein Days events and in their parades, creating literature to hand out and for other groups to hand out like the people campaigning for Dan Seals.

it was a great meeting. Tom has a vision. We need to get the Dems in Libertyville Township to come out and support and join our organization. We know they are out there, they are just hiding.

Come join us. We have a lot of great ideas and events planned and are looking for members, only $10 to join. you can also volunteer for many committees and programs as well as volunteer for any political campaigns you want to help support.

Volunteering at Open Space in Libertyville Township

Haven't posted lately. Neglecting my blogging duties.
Yesterday Sheridan and I and a bunch of NISP girls and their moms and a dad too, went to volunteer on the monthly volunteer day at Libertyville Township Open Space Lands, Oak Openings.

it was fun. We picked mustard weeds (the moms) and the kids got to rake the burn piles froma recent burn and plant new seeds then you rake them over and jump on the seed piles too. Fun and not too hard.

Then we watched the conservationist and some trained volunteers do the burn on another part of the land.

It was very cool.
It is great to volunteer and can be fun too!

Presenting for Lt. Governor consideration

Here is my speech in its entirety... after they ask the questions, if you are involved with the dems or did any campaigning, what one thing would be your passion as lt. governor to change, and something special or unique about yourself that you can offer. I think my honesty about my "dirty laundry" is what lost my consideration, even though i have a clean record. I only got through the first of the 3 sections... but much of this is what was in the forms i had to submit, including my honesty about my potential dirty laundry issues...

Speech:
Hi, My name is Sari Hurtig and I am from Mundelein, IL. I am a Libertyville Township Trustee, I am a single mom age 40 and have a masters degree and I am an attorney.

Did you know that 51 percent of the voting population in IL is female? Of that population 67% are registered to vote. We have only had one female lieutenant governor in IL and she was a republican. In addition are you aware that in the 40 years of my life 30 of those years the governor/lt. gov. positions were held by a republican. Of the 10 years held by a Democrat they were the last 6 up until today.

The reason I am running and I should be selected to represent the democratic party for the Lt. Governor position is because we need change. I mean some extreme change if we are going to keep these offices under control of the Dem. Party. I know there is at least one well known woman who has held political office for many years in IL vying for this spot as well as at least one male with much political experience as well. I would assume they would be the first to be considered for this spot and at first glance that makes sense. They have the political experience and they have the backing and financial support needed to run a campaign as well as name recognition. But here I am saying, please reconsider. Based on IL statistics I believe we need a woman as Lt. Gov. and one who can relate to the people and is one of the people. Not the same old politics or the same old politicians.

I can offer you my age at 40 years, young, and fresh, new blood. I am able to relate to the people of this state. I am a single mom able to work full time and raise a child with little assistance. I am highly educated, but not necessarily highly paid. I am also bilingual in Spanish. I can relate to so many people of our state, being female, bilingual and having a job working everyday 8-5 to support my family. I am not a lifelong politician and I have much business know how and some political experience to bring to this job and to help improve our state.

Many say the Lt. Gov. job is insignificant and although the duties may be light, one of the duties is to do what the governor requires. I think this is a great time for the governor to use the lt. governor to help review all of our major departments, streamline processes and 80/20 the government. 20 percent of the programs, procedures and policies cover 80 percent of the needs of our population. In IL we need change, we need an overhaul. With my education and business know how I can go into these departments, review budgets, look for cuts, make recommendations and streamline our governmental system. We can 80/20 IL. Being a single mom I have learned how to save money, be frugal, cut costs, do only what is necessary. I can advise how to save money so we don’t have to raise taxes, so we can improve our government and make it work better, function better. In addition we need to work on the relationships between the governor and the Speaker. They need to find a way to have mutually beneficial goals that will help the people of IL, NOT the government officials. We need to remember we are here for the PEOPLE, not for our own personal gains.

Having lived day to day life on a regular average, “two” figure salary, I am not looking for favors or political gains. I am one of the people and I am for the people. As Lt. Gov. my goal would be to help liason between the Governor and Speaker, to facilitate the relationship and make it work for all to the benefit of IL so that we can 80/20 our programs and spending to benefit IL overall.

The people have been talking around the nation and they are saying, do not increase taxes and that is what they are saying in IL too. If we don’t get out of our budget crunch and make a viable plan to get into the black we will not be able to hold that seat. I believe an 80/20 approach, streamlining processes will be the way to succeed in IL.

Secondly, my plan to get elected is two-fold. I would seek the backing of the state democratic party and hopefully work with our governor along with his campaign to make us known and develop a plan together we can present to the people as mentioned above to show why we together are a viable team and the candidates that need to be elected for this next term.

I would also go grass roots and go town to town as feasible to meet the people, one on one. The more people you touch the more support you can gain. It is important to connect with local democratic organizations in each community and go introduce yourself and meet the people. Let them get to know you, your plan and thoughts. You need to make that personal connection to help gain that vote.

Of course fundraising is also important. I would seek the backing of my local democratic organizations to which I belong as a start and then grow from there. I would reach out to the many other organizations for support, besides the Libertyville Township Dems and the Eighth Dist. Dems, I would look for backing from the IL state Bar and the American Bar as well as the Intl Compl Prof Assoc of which I am members. I would also contact the Decalogue Society, Hadassah, and the Puerto Rican Heritage Organization seeking support and any other organizations that I am affiliated or active in. I would go to my company Illinois Tool Works and seek backing from their political action committee who have supported me in prior campaigns as well. I also am close friends to a person who does fundraising in non for profit and he has worked in DC in the political arena in the past and seek his assistance too.

Thirdly, I can not say that I have the perfect background. But I can say that I do not have a criminal record or anything that can be held against me. While a law student, 13 years ago my father passed away from cancer, and then my mom was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and I found out I was pregnant. As this was all going on when I was 7-1/2 months pregnant my daughter’s father left me. 3 weeks after he left me, I went to talk to him at his job to try to work things out and found him on the phone with a woman. I was not happy and proceeded to hit him 3x. Realizing what I had just done and being in law school, I went to the police dept. and admitted what I did. I was arrested. I was guilty and had admitted it b/c I didn’t want to screw up my chances of becoming an attorney. The next week, my daughter’s father through his boss told me if I gave him money he would drop the charges. I passed that information along to the state’s attorney’s office and the case was dropped. I had the file expunged and have no criminal record. I did however reveal all this information to the IL State Bar when applying to be licensed in IL and I have been admitted and am a practicing attorney, licensed in IL. I know what I did was wrong and regret it, but I chalk it up to first love. I make no excuses.

I would ask that you seriously consider me, Sari Hurtig, as the right candidate for the Lt. Governor position. Maybe after what I just told you, you are thinking I am not the one. But remember every day people all have skeletons in their closet and can still make great businessman, politicians and ethical people. I am very ethical, moral and have great ideas to help IL grow, succeed and KEEP our democratic seat in IL in 2010.

Thank you for your time.

Libertyville Township meeting

Last Thursday was our regular Libertyville Township Meeting. As a trustee we make decisions as to how we will spend the tax money we are given. Currently we are working on building a new food pantry.

The main part of this meeting this week was about picking a company to build our food pantry and be the construction manager. There were 4 companies that submitted bids and interviewed with Supervisor O'Connor and Trustee Mittelman. They told us about the interview process, who attended, what they said and then told us their recommendation. There was one of the 4 companies that was much lower than the other 3. I questioned why and if they offered to review and fix the quote b/c it seemed way off. They did build beautiful work but I was not comfortable with the bid being so low/off.

We ended up voting and 4 of the 5 of us voted for the 2nd lowest bid and the company that was recommended by Trustee Mittelman and Supervisor O'Connor. Trustee O'Connor was a Nay b/c she felt we should go for the lowest bid and that the work was good and we should be able to depend on that bid. Because of the large difference I did not feel comfortable with that choice, but I did understand Trustee O'Connor's point and felt this to be a hard decision.

You should know, I wanted to be be included int he interview process but was not able to because if there was 3 of us it would be a Quorum and therefore a meeting that has to be announced to the public and that is not what we intended.

Our next meeting is March 25th at 7pm.
Hope to see you there!

Libertyville Township Democrats

last week Wednesday we had a very successful meet and greet at Kaiser's Pizza in Mundelein. Tom Jurgens had put this even together and it went well. We had a much bigger turn out than we thought. There were about 20 people who showed up. We had pizza and soda. We signed petitions and talked about what else... politics. It was very crowded and loud at Kaiser's but still a lot of fun.

I hope this is the beginning of some regular meetings that have as nice a turn out as this one. I think we will start growing and changing. Our next meeting is a week from this Wednesday, April 14, 7:00-9:00pm. Not sure where yet.

Here is our site http://libertyvilledems.org/ to find out more.

We will be discussing summer parades and outdoor events to have booths and get out there to get known and how we can be helping local candidates.
Hope to see you there.

NISP Volunteering at Pals

Sunday, Yesterday, with NISP as the Junior Supreme Star Queen Sheridan and 3 other girls, Alexis, Lydia and ReNee all were at the Gala event at Maggiono's in Schaumburg. The girls did a great job setting up for 2-1/2 hours and seemed to have fun doing it. The parents were a great help too.

St. Patricks Day Parade in Lake Villa Miss Northern Suburbs

Sheridan and the Northern Suburbs Queens were out Saturday in Lake Villa on the float made by their directors, waving and throwing candy.

They had a great time and looked great. I think they had fun too.
After the Parade they went back to their director's house and they had a practice interview with another local pageant director as a judge.

then we all ate pizza and had cookies and Sheridan and Taylor had fun with their pageant director, Kristen's, husband, Kevin who was kind enough to give them some raw cookie dough to eat before actually making some yummy cookies.

They had a great time for St. patty's day.

Democratic spot for Lt. Governor in IL

I have applied with the IL Dems to be considered for the LT. Governor Dem Ballot position in IL.
Now i need to write a letter to all the IL state committeemen and women to vote for me. I wonder if I have a chance. There are about 150 candidates, all types of people. There are definitely a few with a better political background, but I feel I have that perfect mix of a political background, a life in the business world, a parent, am very grounded and well rounded. The perfect candidate for change in IL

Broadway at Alden Nursing home Long Grove, IL

This past Friday, the NISP queens performed at Alden Nursing home a medley of Broadway numbers. It was amazing. They were great. Some danced, some sang. We had Meg tap dance and Sam Irish Danced to Brigadoon. Cassidy and Allison sang a song from the Wizard of Oz and Sheridan sang Baltimore from hairspray.

There was fan dancing too and Annika and her dad sang a number from Annie. Laura and Lydia sang a song from The Sound of Music. This was a great program because in some of the numbers we had the residents participate too. Everyone wore nice outfits or costumes.

Afterwards we hung out at McDonalds.
Always a fun time with NISP. the Queens have fun and so did the residents. They passed out faux flowers to the residents too. So nice, really. What a great group of girls

IL driving laws, new this year

Important New Driving Laws in State of Illinois

Many new laws take effect January 1, 2010.

The Illinois Text Messaging Ban
According to the new law:
"A person may not operate a motor vehicle on a roadway while using an electronic communication device to compose, send, or read an electronic message."

The law defines an electronic message as:
"Electronic message" includes, but is not limited to electronic mail, a text message, an instant message, or a command or request to access an Internet site."

ON JANUARY 1, 2010, IT WILL BE ILLEGAL (in the State of Illinois) to
* Send or read a text message while your car is in traffic, unless fully stopped due to a blocked roadway (such as a train crossing). A stop sign or stop light does NOT waive this restriction. You must place the car in park or neutral gear, or pull over to the side of the road and stop.

* Send or read an email message while your car is in traffic, unless fully stopped due to a blocked roadway (such as a train crossing). A stop sign or stop light does NOT waive this restriction. You must place the car in park or neutral gear, or pull over to the side of the road and stop.

* Use a cell phone in a SCHOOL or CONSTRUCTION zone without the use of a hands-free device. In other words, you cannot HOLD the cell phone while using it. new credit card rules, be aware

What to Expect

Unexpected rate hikes. Over-limit fees. Double-cycle billing. Those are just a few of the credit-card practices that have trapped millions of consumers into a life of constant worry over mounting debt. These practices will be history.

On Feb. 22, 2010, the Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act (CARD Act) takes effect. It puts forth new rules for credit-card issuers that are arguably the most consumer-protective in the history of credit cards.

Credit-card rules are hardly ever simple -- and the CARD Act is no exception. Below are the key changes that the new law puts forth, along with some notable exceptions that could still allow consumers to get in trouble with their credit cards.

Finance Charges, Interest-Rate Hikes and Notifications

· No rate increases for the first 12 months after opening an account.
· Rate increases can only be applied to new charges.
· Annual and application fees cannot exceed 25% of your initial credit line.
· No more double-cycle billing.
· A six-month minimum promotional-rate period.
· No more over-limit fees, unless the card holder opts in.
· No fees to make credit-card payments online or over the phone, unless you make a payment on your due date.
· Must give 45-day notice of pending rate or fee hikes or any other significant changes to credit-card terms.

Exceptions, Caveats, Loopholes:

- Rate hikes are allowed if you're more than 60 days late with a payment.
- Some banks have already found a way around the rate-hike issue, by increasing card users' regular interest rates to as high as 29.9% and then refunding a part of that rate for each month that the customer pays on time.
- Double-cycle billing, although prohibited, can technically still exist for credit cards that don't have grace periods. ·
Issuers have been calling consumers asking them to opt in for over-limit fees in exchange for lowering that fee, says Chi Chi Wu, a staff attorney with the National Consumer Law Center, a consumer advocacy group.

What they're not saying is that if people don't opt in, the transaction will be denied and they will not be charged over-limit fees in the first place, Wu says.

If you make a purchase under a "deferred-interest" plan (such as "No interest for six months," for example), the company may let you choose to apply extra amounts to the deferred-interest balance. Otherwise, for two billing cycles before the end of the promotional period, your entire payment must be applied to that balance. Carrying a "deferred-interest" balance is a risky proposition altogether, says Wu: Unless the balance is paid in full over the specified period, the company will charge all interest retroactively once the promotional rate expires. "We think deferred-interest plans should have been banned," Wu says.

Billing Statements, Payments and Disclosures

· Billing statements must be sent 21 days before the due date.
· Your due date should be the same date each month.
· Payments are considered on time when received by 5 p.m. on the due date or the next business day after a holiday or weekend.
· Payments above the minimum must be applied to the highest-rate balance first.
· Each monthly statement must include information on how long it would take you to pay off your balance if you make minimum payments only and the total you'll pay, including interest and principal; and how much you need to pay each month in order to pay off your balance in 36 months and the total you'll pay, including interest and principal.
· Statements must also include a warning that by making only minimum payments you will pay more interest and it will take you longer to pay off your debt, as well as a toll-free number to call if you want to be referred to a credit-counseling service.

College Students and Young Adults

* No credit cards for college students unless co-signed by a parent or they can demonstrate "ability to pay."

* No credit-limit increases if you are under 21 and have a co-signer without that co-signer's permission.

* No credit-card marketing and freebies on college campuses.

Parents with kids in college...Note this well....

Issuers will likely start appealing to parents to co-sign their children's credit cards. And the Federal Reserve has specified that issuers have the option of keeping the parent on the hook even after the young person turns 21, Wu says. "If that younger person keeps the credit card for 20 years, the co-signer is liable that whole time."
Issuers are not allowed to give out freebies for signing up for a credit card on or near a campus -- which still allows them to set up shop near popular off-campus venues and offer freebies to everyone, whether or not they apply.

Illinois Lieutenant Governor position

So much politics in IL. Corruption and politics seem to go hand in hand.
Did you vote for Scott Lee Cohen? Well I did not.

I can not believe that people just vote for a person who has the most ads. This races shows why the amount a person can spend on any campaign should be limited to be fair. Basically if you have money it seems you can buy a political seat.

On the other hand, maybe IL got what they deserved. If voters are so stupid to vote for someone just because of the ad campaigns and not look into that person and see what they are about, then we deserve to have bad politicians and crooked corrupt ones, which we have aplenty!!

Scott Lee Cohen did put his information out prior to spending all the money on ads. Voters could googled him to see the article done on him about his history after all.

I do not necessarily agree with the Democratic machine forcing this elected person out, and off the ballot. There were 5 people in the race and they all had a chance to campaign and he won fair and square.

All that being said... i have submitted my resume and cover letter to the Illinois Democratic party for consideration to be selected to be on the ticket and run for the Lieutenant Governor position.

I feel I should be considered b/c I can offer a lot. I am a single woman, and mom who can relate to the every day voters. I am not an elitist or rich in any way. I see and face the same everydays struggles all the consituents go through. I can add the benefit of being highly educated, with an MBA and JD and being smart. At least I think I am pretty inteligent. I have a world view of things because of my international experience and jobs, I see all sides of issues and analyze and ask a lot of questions, that is the legal part of me. I am bilingual in Spanish and can communicate with many Dem. constituents in their own language.

I am on the Libertyville Township board and am a great facilitator and I am good at fundraising since I have money that I have raised for my own campaign as well as raising $1200 over the summer during breaks and lunch making calls to raise money for Sheridan's national pageant.

Well, I hope they consider me. I want the dems to know I am serious about being in IL politics. I am here to stay and want to make change because that is what I am good at, improving, facilitating, saving money, and making positive change.

Libertyville Township Dem. Org meeting

We had an open meeting at the Maillards house tonight for the Libertyville Township Democratic Organization.

It was a great meeting. We talked about how the primary election went. About the results and how we felt about those results, in our county and other counties as well as the state elections.

We talked about upcoming Democratic convention in Waukegan on March 3. We also discussed people being elected for the precinct committeman positions and getting people to volunteer now since they can no longer be elected.

we also talked about Madigans putting up a bill to eliminate the Lt. Governor position in 2015.

The big discussion was about whether we should have co-chairs or on chair person to run the Organization as well as the jobs of vice chair, treasurer and secretary. There was some feuding because one person wants to be a chair to be allowed to really establish this organization as a serious viable group versus co-chairs where one person wanted co-chairs because that person felt the person wanting to chair alone was not dependable.

All i could say to the one person, an original to the group, that this is not personal and that that person should discuss with the other founder(s) and to look at the greater good fo the organization as a whole. I told the person wanting to be chair to understand that the person wanting cochairs is wanting this b/c of fear of lack of dependability.

Even in a political group there are politics to overcome. Ugh.
I am sure it will work itself out.

If you are a Libertyville Township Dem. or just a Dem and want to join this group, membership is only $10 and worth joining.
We welcome new members.

To help even further you can forward this message on to other friends and family to help me in my fund raising efforts. Last year I raised $255 for The Children's Miracle Network.

This year the Miss America's Outstanding Teen Organization has teamed up with Children's Miracle Network, a non-profit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of children by raising funds for 170 children's hospitals. This new partnership gives each contestant the opportunity to raise awareness and funds for two great organizations: Miss America's Outstanding Teen Scholarship Fund and Children's Miracle Network.
